Windows Defender blocking an app you trust? Here’s how to fix it properly.

Understand What Defender Is Blocking
When Defender blocks something, check: Settings → Privacy & Security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history.
Note what was blocked and the threat name.
Fix 1: Add Exclusion for the App
Settings → Privacy & Security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection settings → Manage settings → Exclusions → Add an exclusion.
Select File or Folder and point to the app you trust.
Fix 2: Disable Real-Time Protection (Temporarily)
Settings → Privacy & Security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection settings → Manage settings → turn off Real-time protection.
⚠️ Only do this temporarily. Turn it back on after testing.
Fix 3: Submit the File to Microsoft (False Positive)
If the app is safe and Defender keeps blocking it, it’s a false positive.
Go to Microsoft Security Intelligence and submit the file.
Microsoft reviews and usually fixes within 24-48 hours.
Fix 4: Check the App’s Signature
Right-click the blocked app → Properties → Digital Signatures.
Make sure it has a valid signature from the developer.
Fix 5: Use a Different Antivirus
If you prefer not to deal with Defender, install:
- Bitdefender Free
- Kaspersky Security Cloud Free
- Avast Free
Windows will automatically disable Defender when you install a third-party antivirus.
Note: If an app is flagged as malware by multiple antivirus engines, it’s probably malware. Find a legitimate alternative instead.
