File Explorer keeps freezing, not responding, or crashing on Windows? Here’s how to fix it.

Quick Restart of Explorer
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Processes tab → find Windows Explorer → right-click → End Task.
Then press Win + R, type explorer.exe, press Enter.
This restarts Explorer without rebooting. Try this first whenever it freezes.
Fix 1: Clear Explorer Cache
Open File Explorer → click the search bar → click View → Options → Clear (under Clear file explorer history).
Also delete: %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache*.db
These cache files get huge and slow down Explorer.
Fix 2: Disable Preview Panes
Large image files or video thumbnails slow down Explorer.
Open File Explorer → View → Preview pane → make sure it’s OFF.
Use Large icons or Medium icons instead of Extra large icons.
Fix 3: Update File Explorer via Windows Update
Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
Many Explorer bugs are fixed in cumulative updates.
Fix 4: Run System File Checker
Open Command Prompt as Admin:
sfc /scannow
Repairs corrupted Windows system files.
Fix 5: Check for Conflicting Shell Extensions
Tools like Dropbox, OneDrive, or antivirus can cause freezes.
Use ShellExView to disable unnecessary shell extensions.
Fix 6: Reset This PC (Without Losing Files)
Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC → Keep my files.
Takes 30-60 minutes.
If it only happens in certain folders, those folders might have too many files (over 10,000).
